Speaker 0 00:00:20 Next man. It just began
Speaker 1 00:00:24 Welcome everyone to the first season of the groves connection. The podcast that brings you the inside story on healthcare from those who know my name is Dr. Robert groves. And I'll be your host for the groves connection. I'll be interviewing individuals from every corner of healthcare, with the goal of increasing our understanding of the incentives and complex connections that drive our healthcare system. Why are costs so high? Why is it so difficult to get care? How is it that our system can be the envy of the world, a coveted destination for those seeking state-of-the-art care? Yet, we hear that we rank among the worst of our peers in population health, overall mortality and health equity is healthcare a right or a privilege is healthcare truly a market economy. If so, why doesn't competition help us improve our efficiency in cost? What's the difference between universal coverage and single payer? What is value-based care or pay for performance? And why does it matter? Who are the innovative companies and legacy leaders trying to make our system better? Data, information management, transparency, interoperability, burnout, the pandemic, all these topics, and more will be addressed in season one, giving you as the listener, a front row seat in the ongoing debate about what to do to create better care, a better experience and affordable costs in a way that respects the needs of those, providing the care so that they can be at their very best and rediscover the joy of medicine.
Speaker 1 00:02:11 I don't know about you, but I want my doctors and nurses and pharmacists and other caregivers to be happy because then I know they're at their best. When they're taking care of me with our vast resources, our collective intelligence and Goodwill, I believe that all of this is within our reach. I'll bring you guests with firsthand experience each with perhaps a slightly different perspective. And through this process, I hope that you will begin to discover as I have that there are no bad industries and only really a few bad actors. The vast majority of professionals and their indispensable support staff are good, honest people doing their best in a complex and flawed system with incentives that no longer service. My experience is that pointing and assigning blame to companies or industries does little to improve the problems we face, but rather serves to push people further and further apart.
Speaker 1 00:03:09 Instead, let's get curious about the systems and incentives that drive our collective behaviors and along the way, expose the myths and over-simplified soundbites that leave us divided and confused. So I hope you will join me whenever you can. And listen, as much as you can. A couple of confessions upfront, although I'm not new to healthcare by a long shot, I am new to podcasting. I may not get everything right. I hope you can forgive and forget easily because I will be trying out new ways to share information and help the listener, understand the nuances of healthcare. For example, I've decided to start with long form podcasting. The issues in healthcare are complex, and it takes some time to unpack all of these complexities and get a clear picture of what's going on. The podcast allows that kind of in-depth conversation. Many episodes may exceed one hour in length.
Speaker 1 00:04:07 I understand that shorter episodes may get broader adoption and we'll try some of that, but let me encourage you to listen as you can. And then if it captures your interest, go back and listen to more. Our first trio of guests includes ed Clark MD, a very accomplished physician executive who serves as the chief medical officer of the insurance division of a $10 billion integrated delivery system. We learned about his journey to that role, as well as gaining insights into the inner workings of a system that is trying to shift from a fee for service volume based strategy to a value based care system. We will also hear from sunny Tara, who is an innovator and entrepreneur that creates for us a surprising but valuable connection between the casino industry and patient engagement. And finally, we hear from Brent James MD, a member of the Institute of medicine, and a highly accomplished physician executive who shares his thoughts on the pandemic vaccines balance and nuance risk assessment, the shift to value based care and so much more.
Speaker 1 00:05:17 So I hope you will join me as we launched this effort, take what you've learned and start meaningful conversations in your community with your government representatives and with your family and friends. We all have a big stake in getting this right. Not only for ourselves, but for our children and other loved ones, most of us will encounter the healthcare system in one form or another through the course of our lives. We can and must do better. All that's needed is the will to do the work of transformation. Please take a listen. And if you like, what you hear, give us a good review so we can get the word out and subscribe to the groves connection so that you never miss a beat. I can't wait to learn, grow and share with all of you. So I hope to talk with you soon on the groves connection.
